UK LGBT Sports Network
The UK LGBT Sports Network set up in 2009 has five specific objectives: promoting sport and healthy lifestyles, engagement in sport through participation and volunteering, ensuring effective communication across all UK LGBT groups and societies, raising awareness of equality and diversity, combating discrimination, especially homophobia and transphobia in sport, and ensuring representation in sport from grass-roots to the elite by all LGBT communities. The bids for 2015 Eurogames in Manchester and the 2018 Gay Games in London are a pre and post legacy work of this network, and are completely supported and endorsed by all.
A new didicated web site will be launched Spring 2011.
Background
2008 saw Pride Sports host the first UK lgbt sports summit, where delegates voted to set up the first UK LGBT Sports Network. This work has been undertaken by a steering group which includes representatives that have become the first National LGBT Sports Network. It includes representatives from sports groups and clubs from around the UK. It is a strategic advocacy body, that is connecting with sports National Governing Bodies (NGBs), Sport England, the London organising committee for the Olympics 2012 and with knowledge sharing, mutual support and co-operation is at its heart.
2010 saw the first UK LGBT Sports summit delivered by the network (the previous two by Pride Sports) at Twickenham, courtesy of RFU and was run in parralel with the pre-launch of LGBT History Month, which itself will focus on sports for the next two years in the run up to the 2012 Olympic Games. Male Co-president, Simon Powell, led this years team effort to deliver the Summit.
